According to veteran Latino boxing commentator Juan Larena, a large number of South Americans will be tuning in to the highly-anticipated WBA world title showdown between Manny Pacquiao and Lucas Matthysse.
And while Sunday’s Fight of Champions will pit a Pinoy against an Argentinian, the viewing draw for the Latino community won’t necessarily be all because of ‘La Maquina’ Matthysse.
“It’s big,” Larena told ABS-CBN News’ Dyan Castillejo. “Let's put it this way, in Argentina it is big because of Matthysse, but with other territories, Mexico plus Central America plus South America, they'll be for Pacquiao.”
Pacquiao, of course, is no stranger to the Latino boxing fan, having fought and dispatched a number of Latino fighters throughout his storied career.
At one point in his career, Pacquiao was even known as “The Mexicutioner” because of his record over Mexican fighters, a nickname he wasn’t too fond of.
Now, in his 69th professional bout, Pacquiao once again faces a South American fighter in Argentina’s Matthysse.
For Larena, he sees Sunday’s fight as even, but adds that Matthysse poses a serious knockout threat to Pacquiao.
“Pacquiao needs to move he can't stay frozen or he will go down.” Larena said. “I see it 50-50, they have two different styles, and with that you can definitely have a good fight.”
“This one is going to be a great fight,” Larena added.
Team Matthysse has been adamant in their intentions of finishing Pacquiao off on Sunday, and they hope to be the first person to put the Pinoy boxing legend to sleep since another great Mexican warrior in Juan Manuel Marquez.
Can Matthysse take Pacquiao out on Sunday?
