"Congratulations, you’re bringing honor to our country, we’re very happy na yung karangalan na ibinigay niya sa bansa natin, the Philippines, we are so proud of him." - Manny Pacquiao on Donnie Nietes
Filipino boxing star Donnie "Ahas" Nietes closed out 2018 by bringing another world championship back to the Philippines.
On the very final day of the year, Nietes outclassed Japanese star Kazuto Ioka in Macau to capture the vacant WBO Super Flyweight World Championship, and in the process made history by becoming just the third Filipino to win four world championships in as many weight divisions.
The other two to do it: Eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao and four-division world champion Nonito Donaire Jr.
Pacquiao, who's in the middle of training camp for his own WBA (Regular) World Title defense against Adrien Broner this coming January 19th in Las Vegas, had some words of congratulations for his fellow Filipino quadruple-division champion.
"Congratulations, you’re bringing honor to our country, we’re very happy na yung karangalan na ibinigay niya sa bansa natin, the Philippines, we are so proud of him. The Filipinos so proud of the honor that he has brought to our country," said Pacquiao via an interview with ABS-CBN's Steve Angeles.
All three four-division titleholders are current regining world champions, with Pacquiao holding the WBA (Regular) Welterweight World Championship, Donaire Jr. holding the WBA (Super) Bantamweight World Championship, and Nietes holding the WBO Super Flyweight World Championship.
