Filipino boxer Eumir Marcial earned a silver medal-finsh at the 2019 AIBA Boxing World Championships in Ekaterinburg, Russia, Saturday.
The 23-year old Marcial was dominant on his run to the middleweight division finale, blasting through the first three rounds and earning a quarterfinals berth against Iranian Shahin Mousavi.
Marcial defeated Mousavi handily, 5-0 to advance into the semifinals against Kazakhstan's Tursynbay Kulakhmet. It was more of the same excellence from Marcial in the semis as he defeated Kulakhmet, 5-0 to advance into the finals.
In the culminating match however, Marcial could not get going, as he fell to Russian boxer Gleb Bakshi, 0-5, to settle for a silver finish.
A highly-decorated amateur boxer out of Zamboanga City, Marcial has brought glory back home to the Philippines numerous times, capturing gold in the 2015 and 2017 Southeast Asian Games, among others.
With his runner-up finish in the World Championships, Marcial becomes just the third Pinoy to do so, following in the footsteps of Roel Velasco back in 1997 and Harry Tañamor back in2007.
Marcial is expected to be one of the Philippines' bets in the upcoming 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
