Filipino boxing legend Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire became just the third man to go the distance against Japanese KO artist Naoya “The Monster” Inoue, losing via Unanimous Decision in the finals of the World Boxing Super Series Bantamweight Tournament, Thursday evening at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.
Looking to avoid being another name on Inoue’s list of KO victims, Donaire came out aggressive and found early success, opening up a cut on the Japanese star’s right eyebrow with a well-placed hook.
The cut appeared to have Inoue rattled as Donaire tried to capitalize in the succeeding rounds.
Inoue regained his composure as the fight went on, using his speed to wear down the older Donaire.
The Pinoy had a second wind in the ninth round as he connected on a combination that had Inoue a bit wobbly.
That would be the last significant stretch of offense for Donaire, as Inoue continued to outstrike the four-division champion until the final bell.
After 12 rounds, Inoue walked away with the Unanimous Decision win, 116-111, 114-113, 117-109, to retain the IBF and Ring Magazine Bantamweight Championships and claim the WBA (Super) Bantamweight Championship.
Inoue also takes home the prestigious Ali Trophy and improves to 19-0 in his career.
