MANILA — ESports is finally an official medal sport with six titles in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games here, but the Philippines didn’t exactly have a banner start in Day 1, Thursday at the Filoil Flying V Center.
Sibol, the Philippines’ national team for ESports, had mixed results as group stage games in Mobile Legends Bang Bang, Hearthstones, and Starcraft II rolled out.
In the first Mobile Legends match, the Philippines had to recover to force a draw against Indonesia in Group B, 1-1.
Sibol did get its Mobile Legends win against Laos, 2-0, but to end the day against Thailand, the five-man Pinoy squad had to rally again just to force a 1-1 draw.
In Hearthstone, Jacinta Dee went 2-3 in her Group A matches while Dustin Mangulabnan also ended Day 1 with a 2-3 record.
Good news though, is that Caviar Acampado dominated Group B in Starcraft II, racking up five wins in five matches. However teammate Justin Santos struggled for only a 2-3 record in Group A.
Games for Hearthstone, Starcraft II, and Mobile Legends will continue Friday.
