MANILA — The Philippines makes history for ESports in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
Sibol Pilipinas outlasted Indonesia in Mobile Legends Sunday at the San Juan Arena, scoring a dramatic 3-2 win for the gold medal.
The come-from-behind victory by Sibol allowed the Philippines to become the first country to ever capture a gold medal in SEA Games eSports history.
Sibol was the first on the board in the race-to-3 showdown but the Indonesian’s proved their world champion status by taking over, 2-1.
The five-man team of Kyle Arcangel, Carlito Ribo, Allan Castromayor, Jeniel Bata-Anon, and Kenneth Villa rallied to win the final two games to seal the gold medal.
It was a tough road to first place for the Philippines as Sibol had to go through the loser’s bracket.
Sibol swept Vietnam and Malaysia, 2-0, to set up the gold medal game against Indonesia.
Indonesia is home to the world champion team of Mobile Legends.
Sibol’s gold medal in Mobile Legends is the country’s first official medal in ESports for the SEA Games but the Philippines is also assured of at least a silver in StarCraft II and DOTA 2.
