Maroon booters edge NU; Ateneo downs UST

UJinggoy Valmayor score the lone goal for the UP Fighting Maroons as they earned their second win of the season in UAAP 77 men's football.
The University of the Philippines hacked out a 1-0 win over National University on Thursday in the UAAP Season 77 men's football tournament at the FEU Diliman Football Field.
Tight defense played key for both squads as they went into the halftime break scoreless.
Maroon striker Jinggoy Valmayor though finally ended the drought in the 69th minute, breaking through the National U defense and firing off a shot that saw the ball richochet off the left goal post and into the back of the net.
The Bulldogs looked for the equalizer in the remaining minutes, but were ultimately unable to produce any offense.
It was State U's second victory to go along with a draw for seven points while NU absorbed its first setback after a win a draw for four points.
In the first game, Ateneo defeated UST, 3-2, for their second win of the season.
The Blue Eagles' Julian Roxas opened things up, scoring off a header in the 43rd minute from a Miko Mabanag free kick.
UST managed to even things up courtesy of an Efren Menares equalizer in the 63rd minute.
The Katipunan-based squad regained the advantage when Emilio Acosta converted in the 68th minute, and then recieved some unintentional help in the form of an own goal from UST's Norwyn Ortañez in the 85th, pushing the Eagles' lead to 3-1.
UST's got a goal back from Steven Anotado in the 90th minute, but the Growling Tigers could not level the match in injury time.
Ateneo is now tied with UP with seven points, while UST suffered its third loss in as many assignments to remain at the bottom of the standings.
