Blue Eagles beat Maroons; UST scores first win

Ateneo and UST come away with wins during last Sunday's men's football action
The Ateneo Blue Eagles came out triumphant in "The Battle of Katipunan" on Sunday afternoon, defeating Season 76 finalists University of the Philippines 1-0 in the UAAP men's football tournament at the FEU Diliman Football Field.
The Blue Eagles were awarded a penalty kick in the 20th minute, but Mikko Mabanag was unable to get through State U goalie Ace Villanueva's defense.
Eight minutes later, the blue squad was again awarded a penalty and this time Carlo Liay was able to capitalize and send the ball through the back of the net to put the Eagles up 1-0 going into the half.
Ateneo looked to add more cushion to their lead, but Villanueva managed to prevent any more goals from the Eagles.
The Eagles also played some stifling defense, not allowing clean shots from the Maroon booters.
UP had one last hurrah to try and equalize the game during injury time, but was ultimately unable to find the back of the net.
With the win, the Blue Eagles move to solo lead in the Season 77 Men's Football standings with three wins and one draw, good for 10 points. The Maroons suffer their first loss of the season and drop to two wins, one draw, and one loss for seven points.
In earlier action, the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers outlasted the Adamson Falcons, two goals to one.
Steven Anotado opened things up for the Tigers, scoring in the 15th minute. Jean Clarino followed up with a 39th minute conversion to put the Thomasian booters up 2-0 at the half.
In the second half the Falcons managed to get on the scoreboard courtesy of a 55th minute goal by Brian Jumo I.
Adamson desperately looked for the equalizer the rest of the way, but was unable to come up with a tying goal and UST held on for the win.
UST scores their first win of the season and improve to one win and three losses for three points, while Adamson remains drops to four losses in four matches.
Meanwhile in simultaneous matches at the Moro Lorenzo Football Field in Ateneo de Manila, National University defeated defending champions Far Eastern University, 3-1. Paolo Salenga scored a brace for Natuonal U while Patrick Valenzuela scored also converted for the Bulldogs in the 43rd minute to improve their standing to two wins, one draw and one loss for seven points. FEU, who suffers their first loss of the season and drop to two wins, one draw, and one loss, tied with NU and UP.
In the women's division, Ateneo defeated De La Salle 2-0, with goals from Aina Martin and Cam Rodriguez.
