Reigning MVP Paolo Bugas scored one of FEU's two goals to defeat Ateneo, 2-1.
Defending champions Far Eastern University grabbed a share of the top spot in the UAAP 77 Men's Football tournament on Wednesday following a 2-0 victory over Ateneo de Manila University at the FEU-Diliman Football Field.
Reigning Men's Football MVP Paolo Bugas got things going for the Tams early, scoring on a long goal in the 15th minute. Arnel Amita added some cushion to Tamaraws' lead in the 33rd mark, shaking off his defender to find the back of the net for a 2-0 halftime lead.
The score would remain the same in through the second half, as FEU was able to complete the shutout. For their part, the Ateneo defense prevented the green-and-gold shirts from scoring anymore.
FEU now finds themselves tied at the top with last year's finalists University of the Philippines, both with four wins, one draw one loss, and 13 points. Ateneo meanwhile drops to fourth place with three wins, two draws, and one loss for 11 points.
In earlier action, De La Salle University came away with a 2-1 win over National University.
Gerald Layumas of the Green Archers put the Archers up early in the first half, scoring on a header from a Nathan Alquiros assist for his third goal of the tournament. In the 31st minute of action, Layumas was again instrumental on a DLSU score as he found Charleston Uy, who had just been subbed in, to give the Taft-based booters a 2-0 lead by halftime.
The Archers managed to keep the Bulldogs scoreless for much of the second half, until Paolo Salenga was finally get NU on the scoreboard via a penalty kick in injury time.
DLSU temporarily moves into third place with 12 points and remains as the only unbeaten team in the league along with three wins and three draws while NU drops to fifth place with three wins, one draw, and two losses and ten points.
