Four goals and excellent defense played key in dominant win
The Philippines dominated Indonesia, 4-0, to barge into the AFF Suzuki Cup semifinals for the third straight time

Make it two outings, two dominant wins for the Philippine Azkals as they clinch a semifinal spot for the third straight time in the AFF Suzuki Cup with an historic 4-0 win over Indonesia. Star striker Phil Younghusband netted his 42nd international goal via a penalty kick in the 16th minute off an Indonesia foul, giving the Azkals a 1-0 lead going into halftime. Early in the second half, Manny Ott added some cushion to the Azkals lead, firing off a long goal facilitated by Misagh Bahadoran in the 52nd minute. The boys in white put the game on ice late in the second half with two more goals, the first coming from Martin Steuble thanks to an assist from Younghusband off an indirect free kick in the 68th minute, and the final nail in the coffin came from early sub Rob Gier in the 80th minute. Gier scored a second-chance goal from a header that bounced off the post and straight back to his boot for the conversion. Aside from the offense, the Azkals’ defense and ball control were major factors in securing the win. The Philippines controlled the ball for majority of the match while making it difficult for the Merah Putih to mount any offense. There were some close attempts for Indonesia courtesy of Samsul Arif, Sergio Van Dijk, and Rizki Pora, but goalkeeper Patrick Deyto and the Azkals defense ultimately forced a shutout for the Indonesian squad. Aside from clinching the semis berth, history makes this Azkals win all the more memorable, as they snapped an 80-year drought against an Indonesian team. Prior to today’s win, the last Philippine win against Indonesia was a 3-2 decision on May 19, 1934 in Manila. Indonesia was then known as the Dutch East Indies. The Philippines remains on top of Group A with two wins and six points. They take on Vietnam this Friday, November 28. The match will air live 7:30 pm on ABS-CBN Sports+Action channel 23.
