UAAP 77 Menís Football: Ateneo, National U look to Bounce Ba
Final Four contenders Ateneo and National University look to end the first round on a high note.

The first round of the UAAP Season 77 Men’s Football tournament is nearing its end, and four squads will be looking to move into the second round on a high note this Wednesday, January 21 at the FEU-Diliman Football Field.

At 1:00 pm, National University will be looking to bounce back from last Wednesday’s loss as they take on University of the East, who are still in search of win number two in the tournament.

Going into last Wednesday’s matches, National U was in the top half of the teams’s standings, sitting at fourth place and was coming off an impressive 3-1 win over University of Santo Tomas.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, they seemed to be just off and De Le Salle took advantage en route to a 2-1 win, with NU’s lone goal coming from a Paolo Salenga penalty. The 4th year midfielder will once again be looking to lead his squad to their fourth win of the year and keep them in Final Four contention.

UE on the other hand may be down below in the standings, but are certainly not out of the running. A second round resurgence could push the Red Warriors into Final Four territory, and a win on Wednesday could very well jumpstart the team. The Red Warriors’ lone win this season was a 3-1 victory against last placers Adamson.  Rookie Britz Manzo has been a revelation for the red-shirts, as he leads the team in goals and will be looking to help UE to their second win this season.

NU sits just outside of the top four with three wins, one draw, two losses for ten points, while UE is currently second to the last with a single win and five losses for three points.

At 2:00 pm, Ateneo de Manila University will also be trying to put Wednesday’s loss behind them as they take on Adamson, who have yet to record claim victory this season.

The Blue Eagles were riding high coming into Wednesday’s match against defending champions FEU. In their last two games prior, Ateneo defeated Season 76 finalists University of the Philippines and then went to a goalless draw against De La Salle, enough to keep them in second place. The defending champs shot the Blue Eagles back down however, handing them their first defeat this year via a 2-0 shutout. Team Captain Mikko Mabanag and returning midfielder Carlo Liay will be leading the charge for the Blue Eagles as they look to remain in the top four after the first round.

It has not been an easy first year back for Adamson in Season 77. In the squad’s first six games this year, they have been defeated each time. While the first round was tough for the Falcons, they could still manage to shake things up in the second round. A bright spot for the Adamson campaign has been Bless Brian I Jumo, who has managed to find the back of the net twice for the Falcons this season.

Ateneo currently sits at the fourth spot with three wins, two draws, and one loss for 11 points, while Adamson remains dead last with six losses and no points so far.

University of the Philippines and FEU remain on top of the league, both with four wins, one draw, one loss, and 13 points each.

In women’s action, league-leading University of the Philippines (3W-0D-0L-9Pts) meets last placers De La Salle (1W-0D-2L-3Pts) while Ateneo (1W-0D-2L-3Pts) meets Far Eastern University (2W-0D-1L-6Pts).
