UAAP 77 Menís Football: FEU, UP Meet in Finals Rematch

Closing out the first round of UAAP 77 Men’s Football is a highly anticipated finals rematch between defending champions Far Easter University and University of the Philippines this Thursday, January 22 at the FEU-Diliman Football Field.

It has been another impressive season for Far Eastern University. The Tamaraws have displayed championship form in the first round of action, en route to a four win, one draw, one loss record for 13 points in six games so far. The champions have been anchored once again by the performance of reigning UAAP Men’s Football MVP Paolo Bugas, as well as the offensive explosion of league-leading goal scorer Eric Giganto, who has managed to put the Tams on the score board eight times already this season.

Last year’s finalists University of the Philippines have also had a very good Season 77 campaign so far, sitting at the top of the standings also with four wins, one draw, and one loss for 13 points (ahead of FEU in Goal Difference). Senior striker Jinggoy Valmayor has lead the charge for the Diliman-based booters, already finding the back of the net five times this season.

The winner of this match ends the first round on top of the UAAP Men’s Football standings and will be going into the second round with a ton of momentum.

Also seeing action on Thursday will be De La Salle University taking on University of Santo Tomas.

Currently sitting at third place with three wins, three draws, and 12 points, De La Salle remains as the only unbeaten team this season, and have positioned themselves as legitimate final four contenders. Gerald Layumas and Gelo Diamante have been the Archers’ offensive weapons so far, both with three goals each. Senior Nathan Alquiros has also been instrumental with two goals of his own.

Also looking to crack the top four will be University of Santo Tomas, who currently find themselves at sixth place with two wins and four losses. Second year striker Steven Anotado has emerged as the Tigers’ main offensive threat, and sits as the league’s second leading goal scorer already with six made.

A win from either squad could definitely shake up the final four picture.
