Second place De La Salle battles hopeful UST in Thursday's main match

The second round of the UAAP Season 77 Men’s Football tournament rolls on, and this Thursday two squads in the top four have an opportunity to take the driver’s seat as second place De La Salle University faces off against University of Santo Tomas, while third place Ateneo de Manila meets University of the East.

Coming off a 1-1 draw against defending champions Far Eastern University last Sunday, DLSU returns to the pitch and will be looking to bounce back with a victory. The Green Booters remain as the league’s only unbeaten team, compiling a four win-four draw slate, good for 16 points in the tournament. With leading scorer Gelo Diamante out for likely the rest of the season, Green Archer vets Nathan Alquiros and Gio Diamante, as well as key players Gerald Layumas and Charleston Uy will need to step up to help De La Salle remain in the top four.

Looking to break into the top four as well, University of Santo Tomas will need to be dominant in their remaining outings this year, and last Sunday’s 4-1 rout of Adamson University was a good start. Currently sitting at sixth with three wins and five losses, a big win over a top contender like De La Salle will definitely boost the Espana-based booters’ confidence. With key contributors like league leading scorer Steven Anotado as well as Gino Clarino and Efren Menares leading the charge, a UST win is certainly within reach.

In their first round encounter, De La Salle came away victorious thanks to a last-minute goal from substitute Christian Zubiri to break the tie at 2-1. The Archers will be looking for a repeat, while the Tigers have their claws set on revenge.

Ateneo began the second round on a good note, bouncing back from their first round loss to FEU and managing to hold league-leading University of the Philippines to a 2-2 draw last Sunday. Currently in third place with four wins, three draws, one loss and 15 points, only two behind UP' 17 points, Ateneo could once again regain the top spot with a win on Thursday coupled by a De La Salle loss. Carlo Liay, Emilio Acosta, and Julian Roxas have been the Blue Eagles’ top gunners this season and will need to keep their performance up if they wish to make a return to the finals.

Also kicking the second round off on a positive note are the seventh-place UE Red Warriors, who held National University to a 1-1 draw last Saturday. It has been a tough season so far for the Sampaloc-based squad, only managing one win and one draw in eight outings, but a strong second round run could help last year’s fifth placers sneak into the top four.

In their first round encounter, Ateneo got the best of UE, 4-1.
