FEU's Paolo Bugas says he hopes to be back in two to three weeks
In the final match of the first round in the UAAP Season 77 Men's Football tournament, defending champions Far Eastern University went up against University of the Philippines in a rematch of last season's finals.
While the Maroons outplayed the Tamaraws for a 3-1 victory, there was a bigger setback looming for FEU, as reigning MVP Paolo Bugas was on his back and seemed to be in intense pain minutes after the match. Hours later, the Tamaraws' worst fears were confirmed, as it was reported that Bugas had suffered and ACL and Meniscus tear.
"I wasn't expecting an injury like that." Bugas told ABS-CBN Sports.
Following a draw over De La Salle and a win dominant win over Adamson, FEU currently sits in the fourth spot with 17 points, and remain poised for another final four run. Should the Tams keep their momentum and secure a semifinals berth, Bugas says that he is hopeful to be back on the field by then.
"I'm hoping to be back in time for the final four, the timetable is maybe two to three weeks from now. My knee is getting better, I've been doing some therapy and I'm hoping to get back soon."
And while the defending champions are certainly not lacking in firepower, with the likes of leading scorer Eric Giganto, Jhan Jhan Melliza, and Arnel Amita on the field, there's still a certain kind of leadership that an MVP like Bugas brings to the table.
Even though he's out of action for now, he still makes it a point to be a source of leadership, even from the bench. "As a teammate, I give advice about how we play, how FEU plays, and I try to tell them to do what's better for the team and how to get everyone to contribute."
Once Bugas is healthy enough to rejoin his fellow Tamaraws on the pitch, expect them to return to championship form as they set their eyes on back to back Men's Football titles.
