Paolo Salenga connected on a goal in injury time to lift National University past University of Santo Tomas, 2-1 Thursday afternoon at the FEU-Diliman Football Field.
The Tigers took control of the game early, thanks to a third-minute opening goal from Gino Clarino, and managed to keep the scoreboards still until the halftime break.
With their Final Four hopes on the brink of vanishing, the Bulldogs bounced back in the second half and scored an equalizer credited to Patrick Valenzuela.
A draw would do little to help National U's post-season hopes. Luckily for the Bulldogs, their leading-scorer Salenga came up with the game-winning conversion three minutes into injury time.
Following the goal, an emotional Salenga ran towards the NU bench in tears of jubilation as he was swarmed by his teammates.
ABS-CBN Sports caught up with Salenga post-game to talk about his game clinching late goal. "Hiniling ko talaga kay God na sana pagbigyan kami, kasi kung matalo kami or draw, no chance na kami sa Final Four." Salenga said. "Grabe, daig ko pa yung nanalo sa lotto. Ang sarap ng feeling na yung team mo, na-dala mo." He added.
National U currently sits at fifth place with 20 points, within striking distance of the fourth and final spot in the semifinals, currently held by Far Eastern University. A couple of strong performances in the remaining two games of the second round can certainly push the Bulldogs into the post-season.
UST on the other hand, could very well be out of the running as they sit down at sixth place with just 12 points.
