Two Filipino clubs will be looking to claim international success as Global FC and Ceres will try to do the country proud in the 2015 AFC Cup.
Champions in Division 1 of the United Football League (UFL), Global earned their spot in the group stages of the competition, making history as the first Philippine-based club to qualify for the tournament. They find themselves in Group G, along with Myanmanr’s Yadanarbon FC, Hong Kong’s South China AA, and Malaysia’s Pahang FA.
Global, led by Azkals standouts Misagh Bahadoran, Mark Hartmann, Daisuke Sato and Patrick Deyto will be opening their AFC Cup campaign as they host South China AA this coming Wednesday, February 25 at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Manila, Philippines.
Originally slated to be held at the newly constructed Philippine Arena in Bulacan, the matched was moved to the Rizal Memorial Football Field, which recently received a Recommended 2-Star Certification from FIFA. The said certification is a big development for Philippine football, as it opens the doors for the Rizal Memorial as a suitable playing venue for international tournaments, beginning with the AFC Cup.
After playing at home, Global will travel to Kuantan, Malaysia to face Pahang FA, and then to Mandalay, Burma to take on Yadanarbon FC to close out their group stage stint.
Also looking to make it to the AFC Cup group stage will be Division 2 UFL champions Ceres FC.
Led by key Azkals members Juani Guirado, Manny Ott, Martin Steuble and Patrick Reichelt, Ceres will be taking on Maldives FA Cup champions Maziya S&RC at the National Football Stadium in Male, Maldives.
A win over Maziya will grant Ceres a spot in Group E, joining India’s Bengaluru FC, Indonesia’s Persipura Jayapura, and Singapore’s Warriors FC.
ABS-CBN Sports+Action will air the match between Global FC and South China AA on Februaray 25.
