The twelfth edition of the AFC Cup will continue this week with two teams representing the Philippines. Ceres F.C. and Global F.C. will be carrying the colors of our country but Ceres still has to go through a playoff match before the team from Negros can complete Group E. Since Global F.C. won the 2014 United Football League title, the club qualified for the Group Stage and will be part of Group G.
The playoff match of Ceres F.C. will played on February 17 in the National Football Stadium, Male, Maldives. Ceres has been the surprise team in the UFL, winning the second division last season along with the UFL F.A. League Cup. The squad recruited heavily in the past two seasons and now boasts of multiple National Team players. Current Azkals in their lineup include Manuel Ott, Paul Mulders, Juan Luis Guirado, Martin Steuble, Marwin Angeles, Jeffrey Christiaens, Patrick Reichelt and Marvin Angeles.
If Ceres manages to beat Maziya Sports and Recreation Club of the Maldives, the team will join Group E which is comprised of Bengaluru FC from India, Persapura Jayapura from Indonesia and Warriors FC from Singapore.
Global F.C. is positioned in the Group Stage right away and the first game will be played on February 25, 2015. The other teams in Group G are Yadanarbon F.C. from Malaysia, South China AA from Hong Kong and Pahang FA from Malaysia. Global is also made up of current Philippine National Team members like Patrick Deyto, Misagh Bahadoran, Daisuke Sato, Amani Aguinaldo and Mark Hartmann. Global has been one of the top teams in the UFL since 2010. The club won the Second Division title first before winning the UFL twice on 2012 and 2014. Global has represented the Philippines before; in the 2013 AFC President’s Cup but was eliminated in the group stages.
These two clubs have shown to be part of the top club teams in the Philippines today. Their success represents the strength of the Philippine clubs when compared with our Asian neighbors. This tournament was created for developing countries such as the Philippines. The Asian Champions League, which is the elite tournament for Asian football clubs to be a part of, will not out-of-reach if either Global or Ceres puts up a good showing.
