Archers Nathan Alquiros and Chuck Uy came up big in an important matchup for De La Salle as they schocked University of the Philippines, 2-0 at the FEU-Diliman Football Field last Thursday to claim the top spot in the UAAP Season 77 Men's Football tournament standings.
The first 45 minutes of action was a tight one and saw neither team get on the scoreboards. In the second half, UP controlled the pace for a bit, and striker Jinggoy Valmayor had a couple of good opportunities to give the Diliman squad the lead.
Late in the half however, the Archers began to hit their targets, starting with a 77th minute goal from Alquiros off a Yoshiharu Koizumi assist. A Maroons foul in the penalty box resulted in an 84th minute penalty kick, that Alquiros easily sent to the back of the net.
The final blow came from Uy, who scored his fifth goal of the season in the first minute of injury time to push the DLSU lead to 3-0 and ultimately seal the game.
DLSU Coach Hans Smit praised his team's performance, saying that this was the best best game that the Archers have played.
"This is a very big morale-booster. 3-nil against UP. Who can do that to UP? Plus, we haven't lost in 13 games, so it's lucky 13 for now?" Smit told ABS-CBN Sports. "Since our game against UE in the first round, these were the best scoring chances that we've had." Smit added.
As Coach Smit said, DLSU remains unbeaten in 13 games, currently the only squad in the league to not yet taste defeat. Even more important than that, they now currently hold the top spot in the league standings with 29 tournament points. FEU and UP are tied with 27 points, while NU remains at fourth with 23 points. Ateneo sits at fifth and is still in the running for the Final Four with 22 points.
