With three of the Final Four spots already filled up, it all comes down to placing as the University of the Philippines battles De La Salle University for solo first place in the UAAP 77 Men’s Football tournament. The two squads meet Thursday afternoon at the FEU-Diliman Football Field
Coming off a Valentine’s Day win over University of the East, the Diliman-based booters find themselves tied with defending champions Far Eastern University in terms of tournament points at 27, but are currently behind the Tams due to goal difference. A win or a draw against DLSU will push the Maroons back up to the top of the standings.
Expect UP's Jinggoy Valmayor, who currently ranks second in goals scored with 14, to anchor the Maroons' offense once again, as they make a run for the league’s top spot.
After clinching a spot in the Final Four for the third straight time, the Green Archers now turn their attention to their next goal, which is claiming the number one seed. If the cards go in their favor, the league’s only unbeaten team has a very good chance in doing just that.
Currently in third place with 26 points, the Taft squad is only a single point down from league-leaders FEU and UP and win over last year’s finalists will push them up to the top of the mountain.
With the absence of Gelo Diamante due to injury, Gerald Layumas and Chuck Uy have stepped up in a big way for the Archers, helping them to an impressive Season 77 campaign.
UP and DLSU's first round meeting ended in a draw, with Valmayor scoring the opening goal for UP in the 35th minute, but Uy found the equalizer 20 minutes later for a 1-1 draw after regulation.
In the earlier matchup, the league’s bottom-two teams face off as the Adamson Falcons continue their search for a win this season against the UE Red Warriors. In their first round meeting, UE notched their lone win of the season, defeating Adamson 3-1.
