Our very own Global FC had a rough opening match in the 2015 AFC Cup last Wednesday night at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium as they fell to the visiting South China AA, 6-1.
The Hong Kong-based visitors struck early, capitalizing on a miscue that sent Global keeper Patrick Deyto away from the goal for an easy conversion by Daniel McBreen with just two minutes gone by. McBreen scored again in the 27th minute, followed by Lo Kong Wai who recorded a goal of his own in the 39th minute to give South China a comfortable 3-0 advantage going into halftime.
Global had numerous chances to get themselves on the scoreboards, but just could not get their shots to fall. South China however, made the Filipino club pay every almost every chance they could.
In the second half, the trend continued for the club nicknamed the “Shaolin Temple” as Chan Wai Ho didn’t wait long in the second half to add cushion to South China’s lead.
The final salvo came from Cameroonian Mahama Awal, who scored a brace in the 65th and the 75th mark to give South China a commanding 6-0 lead.
Global FC managed to prevent a shutout however, as Michael Jonsson pulled one back for “The People’s Club” in the 87th minute.
Global FC will need to go back to the drawing board before they head off to Malaysia to face off against home-team Pahang FA this coming March 11.
