DLSU, Ateneo battle for Menís Football Finals Spot

Collegiate rivals face off on the football pitch this Sunday as top-seeded De La Salle University meets number four seed Ateneo at the Rizal Memorial Football Field for their UAAP Season 77 Men’s Football Semifinals meeting.

Looking to end their finals drought, the Taft-based booters went on a very impressive Season 77 campaign, finishing the season as the only team without a notch on the loss column. With a Final Four appearance already booked, the Archers closed out the elimination round with a huge momentum boosting win over Season 76 finalists UP and then a victory over NU during the final match day.

What’s more impressive is that the Archers continued their unbeaten streak in the second round after losing then top-scorer Gelo Diamante to injury. Picking up the slack for DLSU was fifth-year man Nathan Alquiros, as well as Gerald Layumas and Chuck Uy. This Sunday, the Archers will look to make the finals for the first time since Season 68.

Making a huge jump from last season’s seventh placers to a Final Four berth this season, Ateneo now has a chance to reclaim the football glory they had during their championship run in Season 75. With their post-season hopes on the brink of vanishing, Blue Eagle Kendall Colet scored a late goal to lift them past UST in the final match day, and ultimately send them into the Final Four.

The return of Carlo Liay to the lineup, as well as the play of leading scorers Emilio Acosta and Julian Roxas are a huge part of the success of the boys from Katipunan this season, and will be looking to get back to the top, starting with the semifinals this Sunday.

With their first two meetings ending in draws, expect both squads to be motivated to prove just who the better squad is this season.
