After months of hard work, training, and competing, it all boils down to one last game for four football squads as the UAAP Season 77 men’s and women’s football titles are up for grabs this Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Football Field.
In the men’s final, defending champion Far Eastern University will be looking for a repeat as they face off against top-seeded and unbeaten De La Salle University.
Coming off their first UAAP men’s football title win since 2010, FEU set off on another strong Season 77 campaign with their sights set on a championship repeat. The Tamaraws hit a couple of setbacks early in the season, which included losing MVP Paolo Bugas due to injury late in the first round.
However, the Tams came back stronger in the second round, once again showing their championship form, closing out the elimination rounds with dominant wins to finish at second place and earn another trip to the Final Four.
In the Semifinals, the defending champions bested Season 76 finalists University of the Philippines thanks to an Arnel Amita goal in added extra time to earn another trip to the Men’s Finals.
With Bugas back in form and with an offensive arsenal consisting of league leading scorer Eric Giganto as well as Jhan Jhan Melliza and Amita, the Morayta-based booters look primed and ready to get back to the top.
For the first time since Season 68, the De La Salle Green Archers have made their way back into the Finals and have done so in impressive fashion. From coming in at fourth place for the last three years, the squad from Taft went unbeaten in the elimination round, eventually finishing at the top of the standings and clinching a Final Four berth. In the semifinals, the Archers met rivals Ateneo de Manila, and thanks to a last-minute goal from the returning Gelo Diamante, who had missed the second round of eliminations due to injury, DLSU booked a trip to the finals for the first time in almost ten years.
With Diamante back and a tough rotation of players including Nathan Alquiros, Gio Diamante, and Gerald Layumas, the Archers are quite possibly a win away from ending a 17 year championship drought.
In the women’s final, the FEU Lady Tamaraws will also be looking for their third straight Women’s Football title as they take on the UP Lady Maroons.
With their eyes set on a three-peat, the Lady Tamaraws got off to a slow start but eventually regained their stride and managed to finish the eliminations five wins, one draw, and two losses, exactly the same as top-seeded UP but falling behind due to goal difference. Sharmaine Siatong led the Lady Tams in goal scoring this year, and will look to lead her squad one more time this season to hoist the Women’s Football title.
From finishing at fourth in last year’s tournament, UP stormed the Season 77 tournament en route to a five win, one draw, and two loss record to finish at the top of the season’s standings. Led by Cristina Delos Reyes and Mary Rose Obra, the Lady Maroons will be standing in the way of FEU’s three-peat hopes.
