The Lady Tamaraws reign again, for the third straight time.
Defending champion Far Eastern University reached the top of the mountain once again claiming the UAAP Season 77 Women’s Football championship following a 2-0 win over top-seeded University of the Philippines.
After a tight start for both teams, FEU’s Alesa Dolino opened the scoring up for the Lady Tamaraws, sending the ball right through the UP keeper’s hands and giving the Morayta squad a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
Tempers flared a bit early in the second half after a hard foul was given to UP’s Kali Navea-Huff. The Lady Tamaraws had a golden chance to go up 2-0 in the match when Barbie Sobredo was awarded with a penalty kick, but was unable to convert the attempt into a notch on the scoreboard. In the 67th minute however, Ina Araneta managed to push the Lady Tams’ advantage to 2-0 with a will timed header that floated just above the keeper’s hands.
With a 2-0 lead going into injury time, the Lady Tamaraws’ three-peat was slowly becoming a reality, but the Lady Maroons were able to make things interesting after Marie Navea-Huff converted on a last minute penalty kick to pull one back for UP.
The Navea-Huff score came a little too late however, as time expired shortly, handing the Women’s Football title to the Lady Tamaraws once again.
Season 77 Best Defender and Most Valuable Player Alesa Dolino spoke to ABS-CBN Sports about claiming the three-peat. “Hindi po namin ineexpect, kasi madaming players yung nawala.”
With regards to her opening goal, Dolino said that she didn’t think it went it, and was surprised to see that it had actually slipped through the keeper’s hands and gone into the net.
The Lady Tamaraws have now won their tenth women’s football title and their fourth in five years.
