MANAMA, BAHRAIN – The Philippine National Football team kicked off their 2015 campaign with a close loss as the Azkals fell to Bahrain, 2-1 last Monday night.
The Al-Ahmar took an early lead, 29 minutes into the first half thanks an opening goal from Faouzi Aaish to go up one-nil. Moments later, Abdullah Abdo Yaser padded the Bahraini lead with a 31st minute conversion to go into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
The second half presented a handful of opportunities for the Azkals to get on the scoreboard, and Manny Ott managed to pull one back for the Pinoy squad with a 61st minute strike amidst Bahraini defenders.
With a 2-1 score and a little less than 30 minutes to go, the Azkals searched for the equalizer with Phil Younghusband and Mark Hartmann getting some good looks but were ultimately unable to convert on a tying goal, allowing Bahrain to come away with a 2-1 win at Full Time.
It’s back to the drawing board for the Philippine National team as they continue to adjust to the new playing style implemented by Head Coach Thomas Dooley and the staff prepare for the second round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
The draw for the second round takes place this coming April 14, 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
