BANGKOK, THAILAND - It was a tough run for the Philippines U23 National Football team, as they have been eliminated from qualification after suffering two consecutive losses in the Group Stages of the 2016 AFC Under-23 Championships Qualifying Tournament.
The assembled squad of some of the country's best young booters found themselves placed in Group G, along with North Korea, Thailand, and Cambodia.
In their first outing, the U23 Azkals were downed by group leaders North Korea, 4-0 while host-nation Thailand clobbered the Pinoys in the second matchup of the Group Stages, 5-1. National University star and Global FC member Paolo Salenga scored the lone goal for the Philippines with a minute left in regulation.
The U23 Azkals will be closing out their campaign and will be hoping to do so on a high note against Cambodia, who are also on their way out of the qualifying tournament. Both the Philippines and Cambodia find themselves with two losses in two matches.
The match takes place on March 31, Tuesday.
North Korea and Thailand sit at the top of the Group G standings, both with two wins apiece. Their final matchup also on March 31 determines who finishes at the top of the standings.
