Maybe it was the El Clasico loss, maybe it was all this Messi talk, maybe it was this little bit of information from a certain eight division world champion.
Whatever it was, something lit a fire under Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo as he went off for five goals scored in their 9-1 destruction of Granada at the Bernabeau Stadium in Madrid, Spain last Sunday.
In the process, he reminded everyone just why he was the 2014 FIFA Balon d’Or winner.
Gareth Bale got things going in the 25th minute to give Real the early advantage, but what followed was downright insane. In a span of eight minutes, Ronaldo toyed with the Granada defense and scored thrice (30’, 36’, 38’) to complete a hat-trick and put Real up 4-0 at the break.

The second half did not get any easier for Granada as Karim Benzema scored a brace of his own in a span of four minutes (52’, 56’). And in between those two Benzema goals, Ronaldo converted on his fourth goal of the match in the 54th minute, making it 7-0 for Real Madrid, just eleven minutes into the second frame.
Granada’s Robert Ibanez managed to pull one back for the Nazaries in the 74th minute to prevent a shutout. Adding insult to injury, Mainz scored an errant own goal, giving the home team an 8-1 lead in the 83rd mark.
Finally, as if to put a stamp on the performance, Ronaldo closed the show with an 89th minute header for the 9-1 final tally.
