A late first half header from the Young Lions proved to be the difference as the Philippines fall short against host-nation Singapore, 1-0 in the opening match of the 2015 Southeast Asian Games football tournament at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Kallang, Singapore.
The scoreline is no indication of the performance that the U23 Azkals put on, as they played the host-nation well, making the Singaporeans work hard for every possession.
With less than a minute left in the first half however, Sheikh Abdul Hadi converted on a well-timed header from a set-piece, giving the home team a 1-0 lead going into the break.
In the second half, the Filipino booters upped their game and had opportunities to equalize from Arnel Amita and Patxi Santos, but ultimately could not pull one back. Pinoy keeper Jun Badelic was also big factor in keeping the score stagnant, preventing the Young Lions from getting another one in.
Singapore gets the first three points in Group A. The Pinoys will have a chance to bounce back as they take on Cambodia on Wednesday, June 3, at 8:30 pm.
