After taking the early advantage with an opening goal, the U23 Azkals were shut down by Myanmar en route to a 1-5 loss in the preliminary round of the 2015 Southeast Asian Games football tournament, Sunday at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Kallang, Singapore.
Shirmar Felongco got things going early for the young Azkals, scoring the opening goal in the 17th minute. The Pinoy lead didn’t last long however, as Nay Lin Tun found the equalizer in the 21st minute, knotting things up at 1-1 by halftime.
The White Angels of Myanmar kicked it into another gear in the second half however, with Shine Thura converting in just a minute into the second half.
In the 62nd mark, Ye Win Aung added to the Myanmar lead, making it a comfortable 3-1 advantage. Just seven minutes later, Sithu Aung capitalized on an errant attempt to clear the ball from Philippine keeper Nathan Villanueva to score Myanmar’s fourth point with a wide open goal.
The final conversion for Myanmar came at a minute in injury time, courtesy of Kyaw Zin Lwin, for a 5-1 scoreline at full time.
The loss eliminates the U23 Azkals from semifinals contention, while Myanmar remains unbeaten in three games to lead Group A with nine points while Indonesia, Singapore, and Cambodia are all knotted up in the middle, all three with three points apiece.
The young Azkals take to the pitch one last time as they take on Indonesia this coming Tuesday, June 9.
