Following a stellar opening run in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers that saw the Azkals defeat Bahrain and Yemen, the Philippines shoots up 13 spots to 124th in the latest FIFA World Football Rankings, released on the organization’s official website.
The 124th world ranking is the highest that the Philippines has gone in history. Prior to this month’s placing, the highest that the Philippines has gone was at 127, a mark they reached in November, 2013.
The Philippines remains as the top football nation in Southeast Asia, with Thailand being the next best nation at the 140th spot. In the whole Asian Football Confederation, the Philippines is the 17th best, with Iran maintaining a hold at the top spot.
Worldwide, Argentina overtakes Germany at the number one spot, jumping two spots from their previous ranking at third. Germany, Belgium, Colombia, and the Netherlands round out the top spot.
The Philippine Azkals will be back in World Cup Qualifiers action this September, as they host Uzbekistan with the hopes of notching their third straight win.
