Yet another blow has been dealt to the Philippine Azkals lineup, as defender and long-time team captain Rob Gier will be out of action for the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifiers match against Uzbekistan this coming September 8 at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan because of a knee injury that requires surgery.
The 34-year old Fil-Brit took to Instagram to announce the bad news, saying that he injured his knee way back in the Azkals's FIFA World Cup qualifiers opener against Bahrain last June. This may also explain why Gier didn’t see any playing time during their match against Yemen just a week later.
Gier joins recent Azkals returnee Stephan Schrock on the injured list. Schrock also tweaked his knee against Bahrain, and was unable to suit up against Yemen.
The loss of Gier is definitely a significant one of the national team, as leadership on the pitch will surely be missed. On the flipside, this is also a chance for other veterans like Phil Younghusband to establish himself as one of the team’s leaders, and for the younger guys to step up for the country.
The matchup against Uzbekistan will be pivotal for the Azkals, as they will be facing the groups top-ranked team following a long layoff.
