Former UFL champions Global FC takes on international competition again as they meet Geylang International in the quarterfinals of the 2015 RHB Singapore Cup quarterfinals. Global and Geylang will meet in a double-leg series, with the first leg taking place this Thursday, August 13 at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore. The second leg takes place on Sunday, August 16, at Bedok Stadium, Geylang International’s home ground.
The People’s Club was victorious in the Preliminary Round of the Singapore Cup, beating out Hougang United, 2-1, thanks to a go-ahead goal from Filipino-Dutch former Azkal Jason Dantes in extra-time, while Geylang International came back from a goal down to defeat the Lao Police Club, 2-1, thanks to conversions from Hafiz Nor and Jozef Kaplan.
Geylang will prove to be a tough matchup for Global, as the Singaporean club has raised the S.League title twice (1996, 2001) and also claimed the Singapore Cup title in 2009.
Rounding out the Singapore Cup quarterfinals bracket is Albirex Niigata (JAP) vs. Balestier Khalsa (SG), Tampines Rovers FC (SG) vs. Brunei DPMM FC (BRU), and Warriors FC (SG) vs. Home United (FC).
Should Global advance to the semifinals, they face the winner of the Albirex Niigata-Balestier Khalsa series.
