Mark Hartmann provided the firepower as Former UFL champions Global FC defeated Geylang International FC, 4-2 on aggregate, last August 16 at the Bedok Stadium in Singapore to advance into the 2015 RHB Singapore Cup semifinals.
With their backs against the wall following a 1-0 defeat in the first leg thanks to a late goal from Geylang’s Jozef Kaplan, the People’s Club had to win and win convincingly if they wanted to breathe life into their Singapore Cup bid, and the Pinoy club did just that, and in Geylang's home field, no less.
Hartmann kicked things off for Global with a 20th minute goal from outside the penalty box to tie things up on aggregate. In the 76 minute, Bruno gave the home team a little breathing room, giving Geylang a 2-1 lead on aggregate.
Geylang’s lead wouldn’t last long, as four minutes later, National University product Paolo Salenga knotted things up on aggregate with a high-arching volley that went past the Geylang keeper who was well out of place.
Adding more drama to the situation, the two squads were tied on aggregate at the end of 90 minutes, forcing an additional half-hour of play.
In the 102nd minute, Hartmann found the goal yet again from long range, giving Global a 3-2 aggregate lead. Hartmann wasn’t done yet, as he completed a hat-trick in the 120th minute to seal the deal with a 4-2 aggregate score and send Global into the semis.
Up next for the People’s Club is a date with Japan’s Albirex Niigata, who made easy work of Balestier Khalsa in the quarters via a 5-1 aggregate score.
The other semifinals matchup features Brunei DPMM FC taking on Singapore’s Home United FC. Brunei DPMM defeated Tampines Rovers, 3-2 on aggregate, while Home United blasted Warriors, 4-1 on aggregate.
