With just days to go before the Philippine Azkals return to the pitch, the team suffered yet another blow to their lineup with the national team mainstay Simone Rota suffering an injury in the UFL Cup semifinals, Tuesday night.
Rota, who plays for Stallion FC, was fouled late in their match against Kaya, and was subbed out minutes later.
According to ABS-CBN Sports football analyst Bob Guerrero, Rota needed to be stretchered out of the arena:
Bad news. Simone Rota being wheeled out of stadium. I hope injury not serious. #azkals— Bob Guerrero (@PassionateFanPH) August 25, 2015
Guerrero later updated, saying that Rota’s injury was in the rib area:
Have just been told that simone rota's injury is to his rib area. #azkals— Bob Guerrero (@PassionateFanPH) August 25, 2015
Looks like its a cracked rib for Simone Rota. I doubt he can play in the September #Azkals games. Lets pray for his speedy recovery!— Bob Guerrero (@PassionateFanPH) August 25, 2015
Rota himself later confirmed on his Instagram account that he indeed has two broken ribs.
Given the nature of the injury to Rota, it’s likely that the Italian-raised Pinoy defender will be sitting out the national team’s friendly match against the Maldives on September 3 and the FIFA World Cup qualifier match against Uzbekistan on September 8.
The Philippines currently sits at second place of the Group H standings with six points, tied with North Korea who leads the group via goal difference. The Azkals will be looking for their third straight World Cup qualifers win.
The 30-year old Rota, who has been with the Azkals since February of 2014, and will be joining former captain and long-time member Rob Gier on the injured list.
