Looking to continue what Global FC started in 2015, two Philippine based clubs will be competing in the group stage of the 2016 AFC Cup beginning late February. 2015 UFL Division I Champions Ceres FC and 2015 UFL Cup champions KAYA FC will be testing their mettle against some of the best clubs in all of Asia.
Last year, Ceres FC was one game away from joining Global FC in the group stage, but fell short in the playoff round. This year however, “The Pride of Negros” clinched an automatic entry into the group stage thanks to their dominance in the United Football League (UFL), winning the 2015 Division I title.
Led by Philippine Azkals mainstays Juani Guirado, Manny Ott, Patrick Reichelt, Martin Steuble, Paul Mulders and Kevin Ingreso, Ceres will be competing in Group E of the AFC Cup and will be facing five-time S.League champions Tampines Rovers, 2015 Malaysia Super League runners-up and 2015 Malaysia Cup champions Selangor FA, and 2015 Bangladesh Premier League and 2015 Bangladesh Federation Cup champions Shiekh Jamal Dhanmondi Club.
Ceres will play their first match against Selangor FA in the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod on February 23.
KAYA FC on the other hand, earned their spot through their 2015 UFL Cup win, beating Ceres, 4-2 on penalties.
Former national team members Aly Borromeo and Chris Greatwich as well as current Azkals call-ups OJ Porteria and Kenshiro Daniels will be leading the KAYA charge as they Group F against 2015 Hong Kong Premier League, 2015 Hong Kong FA Cup, and 2015 Hong Kong League Cup champions Kitchee SC, former Singapore Cup and Singapore League Cup champions Balestier Khalsa FC, and reigning four-peat Dhivehi Premier League champions New Radiant SC.
KAYA's first test will be on February 23 as well when they take on Kitchee SC at the Mong Kok Stadium in Mong Kok, Hong Kong.
