HISTORY. The Arellano Chiefs celebrate their first ever NCAA Men's Football title after defeating defending champions San Beda
The streak is over.
The Arellano Chiefs made history, Tuesday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Stadium after capping off their magnificent season with a two-nil win over the defending champion San Beda Red Booters to claim their first ever NCAA Men’s Football championship and slammed the door on a Red Booter six-peat.
Arellano squandered their first opportunity to clinch the Season 91 title last Saturday, after falling to San Beda in extra time and allowing the defending champions to force a final match. This time around however, 90 minutes and injury time was all it took to see a new champion crowned.
Charles Gamutan was the first to alter the scoreboards in favor of Arellano, giving the Chiefs a 1-0 advantage in the 33rd minute.
In the second half, the defending champs had numerous opportunities to pull even, but thanks to some shots off the mark and the defensive presence of Arellano goalie Jericho Desalisa.
Arellano also had a couple of chances to pull away earlier in the second half, but it was an 80th minute conversion from MVP Jumbeng Guinabang that put the Chiefs up two-nothing, and ultimately sealed the deal for the new champions.
“Napaka-saya po, kasi yung mga seniors namin, lagi silang nakakapasok sa finals pero hindi nila nakukuha. Kami, tinuloy po namin.” said the sophomore Guinabang post match.
In the juniors division, La Salle Greenhills mounted an amazing comeback and dethrone defending champions San Beda, 5-3.
After being down 3-1, LSGH fought back behind a hat trick from Theodore Urijah Travis, and conversions from Clarence Limchiko and Stuart Del Rosario.
LSGH recorded their 12th football title in the last 14 years.
