Rest in Peace, Rogie
University of the Philippines football scholar Rogie Maglinas has reportedly passed away after a battle with cancer.
UP men's football coach Anto Gonzales confirmed the news, saying that Maglinas passed away at around 3:00 in the afternoon.
According to ABS-CBN News' Dyan Castillejo, Maglinas died of complications due to TB Meningitis while confined at the Intensive Care Unit of the Philippine General Hospital.
The 19-year old Maglinas, a native of Masbate, worked hard to realize his dreams of playing football in Manila after being granted an athletic scholarship in UP. There, he played two years with the Maroons, before being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer back in October of 2015.
After undergoing early chemotherapy sessions, Maglinas showed signs of getting better, but according to teammate Ian Clarino, Rogie had already fallen into a coma by late January of 2016.
During an interview with ABS-CBN Sports before Maglinas' passing, Clarino dedicated the upcoming UAAP season to their friend and teammate. "Ita-try na naming manalo this season, pero lagi naming tatandaan yung kaibigan namin na si Rogie, na yung lahat ng laban namin, para sa kanya."
Rogie's wake will be held at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, near Claret School in Quezon City beginning 11:00 pm Tuesday, February 2, before being flown back home to Masbate on Friday, February 5. Public viewing begins Wednesday, February 3.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Rogie, his family, and the UP community.
