Pinoy football club Kaya FC will also look to do the country proud as they meet hometown club Kitchee SC in the Knockout Stage of the 2016 AFC Cup, Tuesday evening at the Mong Kok Stadium in Mong Kok, Hong Kong.
Makati-based Kaya FC will make their AFC Cup debut, gaining entry into the tournament after becoming 2015 United Football League Cup champions, beating out reigning UFL Division I champions and fellow 2016 AFC Cup participants Ceres-La Salle, 4-2 in penalties.
Led by head coach and former Azkal Chris Greatwich, Kaya features the talents of national team members Kenshiro Daniels, OJ Porteria, and skipper Aly Borromeo, also a former member of the Azkals.
Kaya is in Group F along with Hong Kong’s Kitchee SC, Singapore’s Balestier Khalsa FC, and the Maldives’ New Radiant FC.
First up for Kaya is Kitchee FC, nicknamed as “Hong Kong Barca”, an homage to Spanish superclub FC Barcelona.
A highly decorated club, Kitchee has won six titles in the Hong Kong First Division League and was the 2014-2015 Hong Kong Premiere League champions.
In five AFC Cup appearances, the club has done quite well, making it into the semifinals in 2014, and breaking into the quarterfinals in 2013 and 2015.
Kaya and Kitchee kick off Tuesday, February 23 at 8:00 pm. Catch the telecast on Wednesday, February 24, 7:00 pm on ABS-CBN Sports+Action 23!
