Kitchee's Rufino Del Burgo converted a 69th minute penalty to help the home team take down Filipino club Kaya FC, 1-0 in their opening 2016 AFC Cup meeting, Tuesday evening at the Mong Kok Stadium in Mong Kok, Hong Kong.
A scoreless first half of action saw both clubs get their attempts in but resulted in no conversions as the reigning UFL Cup champions held their own against the home squad.
A foul midway through the second half of action gave Kitchee a huge opportunity with penalty, and striker Del Burgo did not was the opportunity, sending the ball past Kaya keeper Matthew Acton for the 1-0 lead.
The visiting Pinoy squad couldn't find an equalizer in the remaining minutes, sealing the win and the three points for Kitchee.
“Both teams played well, but Kitchee got the penalty which made the difference,” said Kaya FC coach Joel Villarino in an interview with the AFC website. “We have to do something about our game ahead of the next match but we have learned from tonight and we can adjust things in the time before then.” he added.
It's the bottom of the pile for Kaya FC early on, as they fall to fourth place in Group F with no points. The win sends Kitchee to the top spot with three points, while Singapore's Balestier Khalsa and New Radiant are tied with one point apiece.
Kaya heads back home for their next outing, a match against Maldives' New Radiant SC at the Rizal Memorial Stadium on March 8th.
