The Philippines has withdrawn as hosts of the 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup
A bit of sad news for Pinoy football fans, as the Philippines has withdrawn as hosts of this year’s Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup.
“The Philippines Football Federation have notified the ASEAN Football Federation that they have withdrawn as hosts for the upcoming AFF Suzuki Cup 2016.” as announced on the official website of the Asean Football Federation, Monday.
The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) shed light on the matter, saying that the AFF disapproved the 15,000-seater Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila as the primary venue of the Suzuki Cup’s group stage.
The Philippine Sports Stadium in Bulacan however, was also nominated, but failed to submit a written stadium hire contract to the PFF.
A new host country will be named when the AFF Council convenes in Vietnam on March 12.
The Philippine Azkals have been competing in the biannual AFF Suzuki Cup since 1996, and have made the semifinals in each of their last three tournaments. Some would say that it was in the Suzuki Cup that the Philippine Azkals first made their presence felt in international football.
Hosting the AFF Suzuki Cup Group Stage would have been a giant step in the growth and development of football in the Philippines.
