LONDON (AP) — Lionel Messi edged Cristiano Ronaldo to take player of the week honors in the Associated Press Global Football 10 on Tuesday.
Both players scored five goals in two games last week, for Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively, but Messi received the most votes from the voting panel.
He scored a hat trick in the 5-1 win at Rayo Vallecano and followed it up with a double in the 4-0 rout of Eibar for the Spanish league leaders.
Ronaldo netted once in Madrid's 3-1 victory at Levante midweek, and then hit four in the 7-1 thrashing of Celta Vigo on Saturday.
"It was a toss of the coin between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, but Messi gets the nod with his overall performance over two matches," Marco Monteverde of News Corp. Australia said.
Riyad Mahrez took third place after scoring the winner in Leicester's 1-0 victory at Watford on Saturday, which put his team five points clear atop the English Premier League.
West Ham's Dimitri Payet entered this week's vote in fourth after inspiring his team to a 3-2 comeback win at Everton. West Ham netted three times in the final 12 minutes, with Payet scoring the winner in the last minute.
Roma midfielder Mohamed Salah took fifth for spearheading his team to a seventh straight Serie A victory with two goals in the emphatic 4-1 win against Fiorentina.
Antoine Griezmann, Luis Suarez, Gonzalo Higuain, Alexandre Lacazette and Claudio Pizarro rounded out the top 10 players in this week's poll.
Thanks to Messi's efforts, Barcelona remained team of the week, with Madrid finishing as runner-up.
Leicester is third after its victory over Watford.
"Riyad Mahrez kept Leicester's dream alive by scoring a wonderful goal at Watford," Aurelio Capaldi of RAI Sport in Italy said. "Claudio Ranieri's team are five points ahead of Tottenham with nine games to go and it looks like it's an unbelievable opportunity for the Foxes to make history."
Atletico Madrid is fourth, after victories in the week against Valencia and Real Sociedad in the Spanish league, followed by Liverpool after its Premier League victories over Manchester City and Crystal Palace.
West Ham, Juventus, Roma, Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund complete the top 10 teams of the week.
