Kitchee's Harima Hirokane (#29) strikes late to to break Kaya FC's hearts at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila
A late goal for sub Harima Hirokane was enough to push Hong Kong-based club Kitchee SC past Kaya FC, 1-0, Tuesday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Kitchee managed to control the first half, stifling the Pinoys on offense. While the visitors controlled the temp on offense, the Pinoy side managed to remain aggressive on the defensive end to force a scoreless first 45 minutes of action.
The Pinoy side became more aggressive in the second half, forcing more attempts, but ultimately not getting any to fall in.
With around five minutes left, a stroke of luck hit the Hong Kong visitors, as substitute Hirokane, who came in at the 83rd minute, managed to put Kitchee ahead, 1-0, after salvaging a broken play in the 86th minute.
Kaya frantically tried to pull out an equalizer, but the Pinoys would find no such luck, even with four minutes added into injury time.
"One lapse, and that's a goal." Miguel Tanton said. "This is another setback for us mentally, but we're still confident heading into the next match" The recent Azkals callup added.
Kaya FC suffers only their second loss of the tournament, after winning their previous three.
As a result, Kitchee overtakes Kaya FC for first place with 10 points. Kaya falls to second place with 9 points. While the distance between the second third seeds is quite significant, Kaya must come away with the important three points in their upcoming final Group Stage match against Group F basement-dwellers New Radiant SC of the Maldives, who will have home-pitch advantage this time around.
