Bacolod-based Ceres-La Salle looks to seize the top spot in Group E of the AFC Cup 2016 Group Stage
With one more game left in the Group Stage of the 2016 AFC Cup, Bacolod-based Ceres-La Salle has a top-seed finish within reach when they meet Bangladesh’s Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, Tuesday evening at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.
After making history and clinching a spot in the Knockout Stage with their scoreless draw against Malaysia’s Selangor FA, the former UFL champions now set their sights on finishing at the top of Group E.It has been quite the ride for the Bacolod-based squad though, picking up two wins and three draws in five matches played.
The last time that Ceres-La Salle played at home, they took down Singaporean powerhouse club Tampines Rovers, courtesy of goals from Bienve Maranon and Adrian Gallardo.
Sheikh Jamal on the other hand, have already been eliminated from competition after going 1-0-4 in five matches.
And while the Bangladeshi squad sits at the bottom of the group, they shouldn’t be taken lightly, as they also managed to hand Tampines an upset loss, beating the Singaporeans, 3-2, last April.
The last time that Ceres-La Salle and Sheikh Jamal crossed paths, it was in Bangladesh, but the Pinoy side came away with the 2-0 lead, behind a brace by main man Gallardo, who’s managed to score in almost every Ceres-La Salle match in this tournament.
A win over Sheikh Jamal ensures that Ceres-La Salle finishes on top of Group E. Should Ceres and Sheikh Jamal figure in a draw, Ceres can still finish on top if Selangor and Tampines Rovers also figure in a draw in the other matchup.
