Ceres-La Salle looking to make even more history at home
Can the Bacolod-based Ceres-La Salle make even more history?

Exactly two weeks after making history as the first Filipino football club to advance into the AFC Cup Round of 16, Bacolod-based Ceres-La Salle have their sights set on even more history, when they take on Hong Kong’s South China AA, Tuesday evening at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod.

Opening their campaign with a dramatic 2-2 draw against Malaysia’s Selangor at home, the 2015 UFL champions’ home opener pretty much set the tone for their group stage campaign.

Led by the offensive attack of striker Adrian Gallardo and midfielders Bienvenido Maranon and Manny Ott, Ceres-La Salle went on to finish at the top of Group E with three wins and three draws, capped off by a 5-0 thrashing of Bangladesh’s Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi earlier this month.

The top-seed finish secured the Pinoy side a home-pitch advantage in the Round of 16, and they’ll be needing all the help they can get against a tough challenge like South China.

Definitely no stranger to Pinoy clubs, the 41-time Hong Kong First Division champions opened their 2015 AFC Cup campaign against Pinoy champions Global FC with a 6-1 rout.

South China eventually finished at the top of their group and made it all the way to the Quarterfinals, where they fell to eventual champions Johor Darul Ta’zim, 4-2 on aggregate.

In their 2016 campaign, South China appears to have slowed down significantly, finishing only second in their group with a three win-three loss record.

While Ceres-La Salle looks to make history, South China will be trying to send another Pinoy team out the door.
