KAYA FC's 2016 AFC Cup run comes to a close after falling to defending champions Johor Darul Ta'zim of Malaysia
Pinoy football club KAYA FC fought until the last minute, but in the end, defending AFC Cup champions Johor Darul Ta’zim of Malaysia coasted to a 7-2 win, Wednesday evening at the Larkin Stadium in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.
While four different players scored for the defending champs, it was Argentinian striker Juan Martin Lucero who had himself a night, putting up a hat trick, with his first goal coming just 15 minutes into the match.
A foul in the 23rd minute awarded the home team a penalty, which was easily converted by Pereyra Diaz to make it 2-0.
In a six minute stretch, it was winger Azamuddin Akil who stole the spot light, recording a brace with goals coming in the 33rd and 39th minutes for a 4-0 lead by the midgame break.
KAYA’s OJ Porteria opened the second half by pulling one back in the 54th minute to cut the Johor deficit to just three goals, but the man of the night, Lucero answered right back within the 54th minute as well, making it 5-1.
Mahali Jasuli joined in on the scoring spree, putting one in himself in the 68th minute, before Lucero put his final touch on the match with a 70th minute conversion.
Fighting until the very end, Antonio Ugarte also managed to pull one back for the Pinoy side in the 89th minute and making it a 7-2 final tally.
KAYA FC’s exit marks the end of the run for the Philippines in the 2016 AFC Cup. The 2015 UFL Cup Champions join Ceres-La Salle as the only two teams in Filipino football history to advance into the tournament’s Round of 16.
