Skipper Phil Younghusband and the rest of the Philippine Azkals put up quite the effort against Australian club Perth Glory FC
The Philippine Men’s National Football team put up a valiant effort, but ultimately bowed to visiting Australian club Perth Glory FC, 2-0, Tuesday evening at the Quirino Stadium in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.
Playing without a handful of international-based members, the Azkals, led by Phil and James Younghusband and Misagh Bahadoran kept things close, maintaining a scoreless deadlock up to halftime.
The next 45 minutes belonged to the visitors however, as they pulled away, starting with a 67th minute conversion from Perth Glory striker Joe Knowles.
Late in the half, the young Azkals callups showed some heart and fight, with UP Maroons captain Daniel Gadia and former San Beda booter Jim Ashley Flores worked together to find former UP star striker Jinggoy Valmayor for an equalizer attempt that was unfortunately off.
Before the Azkals could find an equalizer, the former A-League runners-up doubled the lead, courtesy of an injury time goal from captain Richard Garcia.
This was the first time that the Azkals saw time on the pitch after upsetting North Korea back in late-March.
And while standouts such as Iain Ramsay, Javi Patiño, Neil Etheridge, and a handful of other usual callups weren’t available, it gave some of the younger talents like Gadia, Flores, and Valmayor to show how they can contribute to the national team.
The Pinoy side will have a few more friendlies before they take part in the AFF Suzuki Cup, which takes from November to December later this year. The Philippines, along with Myanmar will be hosting the group stages of the Suzuki Cup.
