Team captain Phil Younghusband and the Azkals meet the highest ranked team in the group on opening day
The Philippines may be hosting Group A of this year’s upcoming AFF Suzuki Cup, but the draw certainly didn’t do them any favors after being placed in the so-called “Group of Death” along with Thailand, Indonesia, and Singapore.
Still, the Philippine Azkals have shown time and time again that they can hang with some of the best in Asia, and playing in Group A should give the Pinoy side some added motivation, being that they’ll be facing the three teams that eliminated them from the past three Suzuki Cups.
This year, they kick off their Suzuki Cup campaign against Singapore, the team that knocked them out in the Suzuki Cup semifinals in 2012.
Thailand is the highest ranked team in the group, at 121st in the world, according to the latest FIFA rankings. The Philippines is ranked at 135th, while Singapore and Indonesia are ranked 158th and 191st respectively.
The Azkals and Thailand meet at the Philippine Sports Stadium in Bocaue, Bulacan on November 19.
