Dipolog’s aim to be the “Center of Outdoor Sports of the South” gets a boost as former Azkals team captain Chieffy Caligdong and footballer and “Gameplan” host Graham Caygill troop to the city on September 2-4, 2016 for Football for a Better Life (FFABL) 2016.
FFABL is the nationwide grassroots football development program supported by British life insurer PRU Life UK. Since August, Footall for a Better Life has visited two other cities: Guingoog, Misamis Oriental and Dumaguete, Negros Oriental. Dipolog is the third stop of FFABL which is now on its second year.
On the morning of September 3, Caligdong and Caygill are conducting a free clinic at the Andres Bonifacio College football field. A tournament for the U8 (mixed, boys and girls), U10 (mixed, boys and girls), U12 Boys, U14 Boys and U14 Girls age categories immediately follows the clinic. Matches for the U16 Boys and Ladies’ Open and Men’s Open categories are set for the following day, September 4, at the same venue.
Caligdong and Caygill are supervising the tournaments in cooperation with the Zamboanga del Norte-Dipolog Football Association (ZANDIFA) headed by its president Irvin Banga.
Schools and football clubs from Dipolog, Lanao del Norte, Zamboanga del Norte, Misamis Occidental and the cities of Dapitan, Oroqueta, Ozamis and Iligan, are fielding teams to the Football for a Better Life tournament in Dipolog. Partners include the Red Cross and the office of Mayor Darel Dexter Uy.
Sports development is a major thrust of Dipolog; the local government sees the hosting of sports competitions and sports recreation activities as means to attract local and international visitors. Dipolog has produced top teams who have emerged champs at the Palarong Pambansa and the Private Schools Athletic Association Regional Collegiate Games (PRISAA). Dipolog has also produced good footballers, one of whom is Global FC defender Jerry Barbaso who also played for the Philippine Men’s National Football Team.
September is going to be a busy month for FFABL as it is holding clinics and tournaments all weekends: September 10-11 in Tarlac City, September 17-18 in Laguna and September 24-25 in Pagadian City.
