CAEN, France (AP) — Criticized for his profligacy in the Champions League, Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani silenced his critics by netting four goals in a landslide 6-0 win over Caen in the French league on Friday.
Cavani, who is now playing in his favorite center forward role after Zlatan Ibrahimovic left for Manchester United during the summer, scored PSG's goal in a 1-1 draw with Arsenal in the Champions League midweek but also missed three clear-cut chances.
Cavani, who took responsibility for his missed occasions after that game, made amends at Caen, scoring four goals in 45 minutes.
The Uruguay striker's performance helped PSG end a three-game winless streak and move to the top of the league standings, level on points with Monaco, which hosts Rennes on Saturday.
Lucas and Jean-Kevin Augustin added more luster to the four-time defending champion's win in the second half.
Cavani wasted a first chance in the fourth minute, missing the target from Angel Di Maria's pass but opened the scoring eight minutes later with a left-footed shot off the post and into the net.
He doubled his team's lead from the penalty spot in the 22nd after Syam Ben Youssef fouled Lucas and completed his hat-trick in the 38th from Maxwell's cross.
Cavani, who had scored only once in three previous league games, capped his excellent display with an angled shot into the net to finish off a fine team move.
Cavani was replaced by PSG's new signing Jese in the second half.
