The Philiippine Azkals open the 2016 Suzuki Cup against the 2012 champions Singapore
The Azkals begin their journey to cementing the Philippines' status as the best football nation in Southeast Asia as they open the 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup against Singapore on Saturday, November 19th at the Philippine Sports Stadium in Bocaue, Bulacan.
After ending their World Cup Qualifiers campaign on a high note, the Philippine Azkals shifted their focus on the AFF's premiere biennial tournament, the Suzuki Cup.
To prepare for the tournament, the Philippines went through a series of international friendlies, against the likes of Bahrain, North Korea, and Kyrgyzstan twice.
While the Pinoy side came up short in two straight friendlies against Bahrain and North Korea, they managed to pick up a confidence-boosting win over higher-ranked Kyrgyzstan, courtesy of a late goal from Misagh Bahadoran.
The Azkals hope to be able to carry that momentum as they begin thier journey in the Group of Death, which features two of the last three champions of the Southeast Asian tournament.
It has been quite the rough 2016 for the Singaporean national team, managing onyly three wins in ten matches. Before heading into the Suzuki Cup however, the 2012 Suzuki Cup champions managed to snap a seven-match winless strea with a 1-0 win over Cambodia. Now they hope to continue the streak against the Philippines.
