Azkals captain Phil Younghusband scores his 43rd international career goal to hold Indonesia to a draw.
With less than ten minutes left in the match and trailing Indonesia by a single goal, Philippine Azkals skipper Phil Younghusband fired a free kick that went straight into the back of the net to pull even and eventually hold Indonesia to a 2-2 draw in their 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup match, Tuesday evening at the Philippine Sports Stadium in Bocaue, Bulacan.
Needing to bounce back after a scoreless draw against Singapore in their opening match, the Azkals came out and looked to score early, but it was the visiting side who drew first blood, courtesy of a seventh minute goal from Fachruddin Aryanto.
Needing to play catch-up for the first time in the tournament, the Pinoy side looked for the equalizer, led by chances from brothers Mike and Manny Ott.
Like he has done so many times in the Azkals’ recent outings, it was forward Misagh Bahadoran who came up with the equalizer in the 31st minute, flicking one in from a free kick setup by Stephan Schrock.
The Indonesian side appeared to have scored just moments after Bahadoran’s equalizer, but the conversion was waved off after an offside violation was called.
In the 68th minute of the match, Indonesian skipper Boas Salossa followed up on a missed first attempt to push the visitors back up, 2-1.
As time wound down, it looked as if the Azkals would succumb to Indonesia, but Younghusband’s heroic 43rd international conversion ended up becoming the Azkals saving grace that night.
Prior to this conversion, Younghusband’s last goal came nearly exactly two years ago, in the 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup, coincidentally against Indonesia as well, in Hanoi.
The Philippine Azkals move to two draws for two points in the tournament, and are again facing a must-win situation against Group A leaders Thailand, who have already clinched a semifinals berth after defeating Singapore.
The Azkals close their group stage against Thailand on Friday at the Philippine Sports Stadium in Bocaue, Bulacan.
